For the bride, a marriage in the Dinka people of South Sudan entails four years of freedom.

Women are treated godly even though they must pay dowries that can amount to between 100 and 500 cows.

A man's wife will not sweep or cook for four years after they get married. "Anyuuc" refers to this time frame (Generous Welcoming). The new wife is supposed to use it to unwind, rest, and learn about her husband's homestead beliefs.

Her husband's sister will take care of the cooking, cleaning, firewood gathering, water fetching, and other household chores till later.

After four years, her husband makes the decision to throw a huge celebration known as a "Thaat" (cooking festival), during which three cows and five goats are killed in order to teach a woman how to prepare meals for the family.
