The International Longshoremen's Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance reached an agreement that ended a large dockworkers' strike that affected ports from Maine to Texas.
The parties extended the contract to January 15, 2025, as long as certain problems remained unaddressed. Nevertheless, the primary worry of 45,000 workers at 36 ports was resolved.
Dockworkers will see a boost in pay of almost 62% over the course of the next six years. Remember that the union had requested a salary raise of 77%. The parties released a joint statement saying, "With immediate effect, all current strikes will cease and all work covered by the Basic Contract will resume."
