Biblical Reflection: Trusting God's Sovereignty in Leadership — Lessons from Canada’s 2025 Election

Introduction:

Canada’s 2025 federal election ended with the Liberal Party, led by Mark Carney, forming a minority government. Despite early predictions of a Conservative landslide, God allowed a political turnaround.
For believers, this election is not just a political event — it’s a reminder that God remains sovereign over the nations, no matter the human outcome.

“The Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom He will.”
Daniel 4:17 (ESV)

1. God is Sovereign Over Elections

While campaigns are filled with strategy, ads, and rallies, the final outcome belongs to God. He can promote or remove leaders according to His will and purpose.

“For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.”
Romans 13:1 (ESV)

Lesson:

Whether your preferred candidate won or lost, trust God’s greater plan. Christians are called to pray for their leaders, not just vote for them.

2. Leadership is a Tool in God’s Hands

Mark Carney’s unexpected victory and Pierre Poilievre’s shocking defeat (even losing his seat) show that leadership is never guaranteed by human popularity. The Lord raises up whom He chooses.

“He changes times and seasons; He removes kings and sets up kings.”
Daniel 2:21 (ESV)

Lesson:

Sometimes God allows shifts in power to fulfill prophecy, bring about national repentance, or protect His people. Be alert spiritually — not just politically.

3. The Church Must Remain the Light Regardless of Political Climate

Whether liberal or conservative policies dominate, the Church’s mission doesn’t change. Believers must continue preaching Christ, serving communities, and influencing culture with kingdom values.

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
Matthew 5:14 (ESV)

Lesson:

Don’t depend on government to uphold morality or spread the Gospel. That’s the job of the Church.

4. Pray for the Nation and Its Leaders

As Paul instructed the early church, we are to pray for all who are in authority — not just those we agree with — so we may live in peace and godliness.

“I urge... that prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made... for kings and all those in authority.”
1 Timothy 2:1–2 (NIV)

Lesson:

Now is the time to pray for Prime Minister Carney, for wisdom, integrity, and righteousness to guide his government. A praying church can shape a nation.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for Your hand in the affairs of Canada. You are the God who installs leaders and removes them. We trust in Your perfect plan.
Guide Prime Minister Mark Carney, and every elected official. Let righteousness rule in the land. Help the Church in Canada shine brightly, love boldly, and speak truth courageously.
May this season lead to revival, repentance, and renewal in the hearts of Canadians.
In Jesus’ Mighty Name,
Amen.
