Our God is a covenant-making and covenant-keeping God, according to what the Bible says. Are you aware of the astounding nature of that fact?
That was not the case with the ancient gods. The Greek and Roman mythological gods were thought to be large and powerful, but their personalities reflected every human weakness. They acted what they wanted and never made or kept pledges to humanity.
Similarly, the thousands of gods that Hindus and adherents of other Eastern religions worshipped didn't bother to promise anything to people or extend an invitation to a personal relationship.
They created guidelines for living, but the law of karma—which forewarned individuals that they would be reborn indefinitely to suffer the repercussions of their poor decisions—was the only thing that resembled a guarantee.
You see, we would unavoidably manufacture our own gods in our own likenesses if you or I were to create them. impetuous. Not trustworthy. Selfish. Insincere. Promises made to lowly mortals are never patronizing.
However, the God portrayed in the Bible is very different. He is totally dependable when he makes promises. "Know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments," He told the Israelites (Deuteronomy 7:9 NKJV). Indeed, He is "the faithful God"—the only one who is faithful! He is the God "who keeps covenant," meaning He never breaks His word.
If you get into a covenant or arrangement with someone else, they will probably disappoint you occasionally. The Bible affirms the Lord's reliability, however, saying that "whoever believes in Him will not be put to shame" (Romans 10:11 NASB). Thank God!
He is "Faithful and True" in a world of chaos and uncertainty (Revelation 19:11 NKJV).
Maybe a friend, spouse, child, or employer betrayed you or didn't fulfill their commitments, and it destroyed your heart. But with God, you never have to be concerned about that:
Since God is neither a man nor a son of man, He cannot lie or repent. Will He not perform what He has said? Or has He spoken something and is He not going to make it good? (NKJV, Numbers 23:19).
We pray that you are already familiar with this wonderful God. He is calling you to deepen your covenant relationship with Him now because He loves you so much.
