In 2018, French teacher Peter Vlaming refused to refer to transgender students by special pronouns. The teacher was sacked by school administrators, but six years later he received justice. Soon after his dismissal, Vlaming sued the West Point (Virginia) school system in conjunction with the Christian advocacy group Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF). The teacher argued in the lawsuit that using transgender pronouns violated his religious convictions.
Vlaming attempted to "accommodate" the transgender student by referring to him just by his first name; but, the school, the boy, and his parents insisted that the teacher refer to the biological girl in a masculine manner.
Eventually, Vlaming and the school board for the district came to a resolution. In addition to receiving $575,000 in compensation, the teacher's record will be cleared of all reference to his departure.
