The Role of Grace in Faith: A Deep Biblical Teaching

1. Understanding Grace and Faith

Grace and faith are central to the message of salvation. Grace is the unmerited favor of God, while faith is the means by which we receive that grace.

  • Ephesians 2:8-9"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast."
  • Romans 3:24"Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus."

This means that salvation is entirely a gift from God, not something we earn. We receive this gift through faith, but even faith itself is enabled by grace.

2. What is Grace?

Definition of Grace

Grace is God’s undeserved kindness and love toward humanity. It is freely given and cannot be earned by good works.

  • Romans 11:6"And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace."
  • Titus 3:5"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us."

Types of Grace

  1. Common Grace – The grace God shows to all people, regardless of faith. (Matthew 5:45 – "He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good.")
  2. Saving Grace – The grace that leads to salvation through faith in Christ. (Ephesians 2:8)
  3. Sustaining Grace – The grace that helps believers continue in their faith and overcome struggles. (2 Corinthians 12:9 – "My grace is sufficient for you.")

3. What is Faith?

Definition of Faith

Faith is trusting in God’s promises and relying on Him completely.

  • Hebrews 11:1"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
  • Romans 4:20-21"He (Abraham) did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform."

Faith is not just believing in God’s existence but placing full trust in His saving work through Christ.

4. The Relationship Between Grace and Faith

Grace and faith work together in salvation.

  • Grace is the cause of salvation (God’s gift).
  • Faith is the means of receiving salvation (our response).

Biblical Example: Abraham’s Faith and God’s Grace

  • Romans 4:3"Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness."
  • Genesis 15:6 – Abraham’s righteousness was not based on works but on faith in God’s promise.

God’s grace made salvation possible, and Abraham’s faith received that promise.

5. The Role of Grace in Strengthening Faith

Even after salvation, grace continues to strengthen our faith.

  • Grace enables us to believe in Christ.(John 6:44 – "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him.")
  • Grace helps us endure trials and remain faithful.(2 Corinthians 12:9 – "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.")
  • Grace teaches us to live holy lives.(Titus 2:11-12 – "The grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly.")

Faith is not something we generate on our own—it is a response to God’s grace working in us.

6. Misunderstandings About Grace and Faith

Some people misunderstand the relationship between grace and faith, leading to errors:

1. Legalism – Salvation by Works

  • Some believe salvation is earned through good deeds, but the Bible teaches we are saved by grace alone. (Galatians 2:16 – "A man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ.")

2. Cheap Grace – No Need for Obedience

  • Some teach that grace allows people to live in sin. But true grace leads to a changed life. (Romans 6:1-2 – "Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not!")

True grace produces faith that leads to obedience.

7. The Assurance of Salvation Through Grace and Faith

Because salvation is by grace through faith, believers can be assured of their salvation.

  • Romans 8:1"There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus."
  • John 10:28-29"I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand."

Salvation does not depend on our performance, but on God’s grace and our faith in Christ.
