John 3:1–21 is the well-known Bible passage that provides an answer to this query. Nicodemus, a well-known Pharisee and member of the Sanhedrin (the Jewish ruling body), is speaking to the Lord Jesus Christ. At night, Nicodemus had approached Jesus with several inquiries.

"I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again," Jesus remarked to Nicodemus. "How can an elderly man be born?" Nicodemus inquired. "Surely he can't go into his mother's womb to be born again!" "I tell you the truth," Jesus replied, "no one who is not born of water and the Spirit can enter the kingdom of God." While the Spirit gives birth to spirit, flesh gives birth to flesh. My statement that "you must be born again" should not come as a surprise to you (John 3:3–7).

"Born from above" is another way to translate the phrase "born again." Nicodemus was truly in need.

He needed to have his heart changed—to undergo a spiritual metamorphosis that only God could provide. A person who believes is given eternal life through God's act of new birth, also known as being born again (2 Corinthians 5:17; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:3; 1 John 2:29; 3:9; 4:7; 5:1–4, 18). Being "born again" also entails becoming "children of God" by placing one's faith in the name of Jesus Christ, according to John 1:12–13.

"Why does a person need to be born again?" is a reasonable question to ask. "And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins," the apostle Paul states in Ephesians 2:1 (NKJV).

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God," he wrote to the Romans (Romans 3:23). The Bible compares the spiritual life that sinners obtain through faith in Christ to a rebirth since they are spiritually "dead." The only people who can have a connection with God and have their sins forgiven are those who are born again.

Jesus emphasized to Nicodemus twice that in order to enter the kingdom of God, one must be born again (John 3:3, 5). We share Adam's sinfulness and are his progeny because we were only born once. To become God's offspring, we must experience a second birth, a spiritual one. We need to have a new birth.
